See highlights of the Mission Projects that St. Paul's took on throughout the 2023-2024 mission year. We did all kinds of mission from our usual shelter meals at Safe harbor in Easton, to a week-long trip to Wooster Ohio!
Thank you to all the volunteers who made these activities possible and we hope to see many more for our events in the upcoming years! If you're interested in volunteering reach out to a member of our Mission Team!
For many, the need for help can happen quickly and last long; that's why St. Paul's collects and donates all year long. Listed below are continuous collections taken up by the members of St. Paul's. These collections are delivered regularly to regional nonprofits to help people in all walks of life, in all situations, whenever they need it.
In 2022 we set up our very own Little Free Library outside of our church Annex. Since then, visitors have taken, left, and traded their books for others to enjoy. We've seen a wonderful response and hope to continue to see our church family and community enjoy it.
We are always looking for donations of books to refill the library when it gets a little low; children's books especially are always needed and greatly appreciated!
We are collecting new or gently used men's, women's, and children's clothing to help those in need. Everything from shirts and jackets to socks and underwear and welcome and greatly appreciated. Some of the organizations our donations support include: Allentown Rescue Mission, Turning Point of Lehigh Valley, The Wardrobe, and many more!
Do you have old purses or backpacks that you no longer use but are still in great condition? We are accepting donations of purses, bags, and backpacks which will be filled with travel-sized personal care items. These bags will be taken down with us on our Philadelphia Mission trip where they can be given to those in need. They truly are a blessing to those living on the streets or in homeless shelters who may not have regular access to toiletries or nice bags to carry their belongings.
Cradles to Crayons is a Philly-based organization that provides children living in homeless, low-income, or emergency foster placement situations with the essential items they need to thrive such as clothing, school supplies, books, and toys. If your children used it lightly, other children can use it too!
Our local families in need benefit greatly from your donations to the Northampton Area Food Bank. Items currently needed: Canned soup, canned or boxed potatoes, peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and sauce, baked beans, canned meats, beef stew, tuna fish. Donated items and monetary donations can be dropped off in the basket in the Narthex or at the church office!
Each month brings new opportunities to reach out and help our communities locally and abroad. Listed below are all of the mission activities that our church community undertake throughout the year. St. Paul's is proud of its dedication to helping our neighbors in need and we hope that you'll join us in spreading light.
Homeless shelters and agencies often face a shortage of outerwear and traditional clothing for those who are homeless or in need. And yet, there is also a very real need for other items of clothing for the homeless and economically challenged that is often overlooked - underwear; including new undergarments, socks and long johns.
All January and February, we will be collecting new men’s, women’s and children’s socks, T-shirts, underwear and long johns which will be donated to organizations helping those in need. All donations MUST be new and in original packaging or have the sales tag still attached. All donated items will be presented during Worship on Undie Sunday, usually the last Sunday of February (See the Calendar or Upcoming Mission pages for specific dates and more information).
Serving a meal to the homeless is so much more than just providing fuel to keep the body going; it's a sign to those in need that they are seen and cared for. Every March, we pick a day to prepare a meal for those in need at Safe Harbor Shelter in Easton. Meals are prepared at Safe Harbor and all are welcome to join or donate food and cash towards this effort. Previous meals have ranged from a beef stew dinner to a delicious brunch spread. Upcoming dates and more information on registering to help will be found on the "Upcoming Mission" page as the date approaches.
While the need for food is constant, that doesn't mean we can't help out a bit extra here and there. Along with our ongoing collection of food, April is our featured month to help out at our local food bank! Bring your donations of food to the church and place them in the collection bin at the back of the Sanctuary in the Narthex. If you wish to volunteer at the food bank, you can contact the directly.
While you're packing for your summer trip, pick up some extras for those in need! We're always on the look out for travel-size soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, deodorants, lip balm, feminine care products, and other personal care items. These will go a long way towards helping our neighbors restore their personal dignity and self-image one little bottle at a time!
While we gladly accept all these items year-round, we're putting a special emphasis on them in these summer months! Whether you're getting ready or already at the hotel, grab some extras for those in need!
In the summer, we undertake one of our largest mission projects to spread hope beyond our local communities with our Work Camp Weekend / Mission Trip! These trips bring our volunteers into areas of the most need to help at soup kitchens, shelters, and even arts and crafts workshops for those less fortunate than ourselves. Previous trips have included multiple weekend-long excursions to Philadelphia and a week-long trip to Boston. This mission is especially important to many people as you see first-hand the many faces and stories behind homelessness.
Details of upcoming trips can be found on the "Upcoming Mission" page and we encourage you to ask other church members about their experiences on these trips and the impact that it had on them.
Socks are the #1 clothing need of those experiencing homelessness. Throughout the month of September, we are focusing our donations on collecting new socks for all ages. We hope to make a huge impact one pair at a time! Sock donations can be placed in the collection basket in the narthex.
Are you interested in rolling up your sleeves and helping disadvantaged children around the Greater Philadelphia/Eastern PA region?
In addition to our ongoing collection, in September we regularly plan an afternoon mission trip to Cradles to Crayons Giving Factory. Anyone age six and above can volunteer at the Giving Factory and engage in age-appropriate work tasks. We usually work both the morning shift (10:00–12:00) and the afternoon shift (1:00-3:00). Activities include sorting, making outfit packs, and even making cards. Check the "Upcoming Mission" page for more information as we plan our next trip!
The Miracle league of the Lehigh Valley aims to provide sporting and social activities to children and young adults with special needs. One of these events is the annual Trick-or-Treat where organizations gather to give out candy to those children and young adults who may find it difficult to do so in their own communities. St. Paul's has been represented at this event for 13 straight years handing out candy and snacks with themes ranging from Wild West to Backyard Barbecue.
This event generally takes place on the Wednesday before the week of Halloween and runs from 6-8pm with set-up beginning at 4:30. Volunteers to hand out treats and help set up are welcome and greatly appreciated as well as donations of candy or cash. To sign up to volunteer or for more information, see our "Upcoming Mission" Page for details as they are released.
Join us as we decorate our trunks and hand out candy to our local community! This event offers a safe space during daylight hours for our community members to partake in the Halloween spirit and grab some candy along the way. Trunk-or-Treat is open to all members of our surrounding community both to have fun trick-or-treating, and to bring their own trunk to decorate and pass out treats from. We've had a great turn out 3 years running and hope to grow this event more in the future! Watch our "Upcoming Mission" page for more details and registration as it becomes available.
Serving a meal to the homeless is so much more than just providing fuel to keep the body going; it's a sign to those in need that they are seen and cared for. Just like we did in March, in November we head again to Safe Harbor Shelter in Easton to prepare a meal for our local community.
The Angel Tree Project gives children in need a little something special during the Christmas season. Paper angels will be placed on the Angel Tree at the front of the Sanctuary with the name and age of a child in need as well as a short wish list. You then use this list to purchase a gift for that child for them to open on Christmas morning. While you're out shopping for family and friends, remember that not everyone is able to do that and pick up something extra to give a little extra goodwill to a child in need. The angel tree will be at the front of the Sanctuary starting the first week of December and information can be found on our "Upcoming Mission" page at that time.
As the angels come off the trees, the hats and mittens go up. Whether handmade or store bought, new winter wear will warm the hands, heads, and hearts of less fortunate children and adults this winter. By hanging warm winter accessories on the Mitten Tree, we can continue to warm our community with the spirit of the Christmas season. Winter accessories placed on the tree will be donated to our local charities and shelters who provide them to those who need them the most. The Mitten Tree will be at the front of the Sanctuary throughout the month of December.
